midtnmama, I like cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, peas, corn, green beans, the occasional salad, cauliflower, asparagus, etc. I just like junk food better, lol. I'm working on increasing the veggies and decreasing the salt and fat, but I have to do it gradually if it is going to stick. I still haven't found my bucket opener, so I broke down and spent $3.78 on another one on Amazon. I figure when the others show up, I can add a string to the handle of each one and hang them near where I open buckets so they can be found easily and reliably. I've already been putting this one to use (it came this morning), prying lids off so I can finish cleaning buckets. Since it's a showery day, it's a good time to work on finishing up this project. I run out and do stuff outside when it's not raining, and run inside when the next downpour hits, lol. My bff called yesterday and asked if I wanted to go with her to Costco. Yes, please! I stocked up on supplements including the CoQ10 the pharmacist recommended and my glucosamine supplements with various other additives that make such a difference in the amount of joint pain I experience, and generic Nasacort. I found out why Imodium is so hard to find and especially in bottles of 60 or more. Evidently, if you take large quantities of loperamide, like 100 pills at a time, it can give you an opiate-like high. 🙄 Once again, addiction is ruining things for those of us who use a medication for its stated purpose. 😡 I guess you can still get it at Costco, but it's behind the counter and you can only get 40 or so at a time. There was no one in the pharmacy that I could see. I splurged on more perennials and spring bulbs while I was at Costco. If I actually plant them, they will be a bargain. I've been weeding flowerbeds a bit at a time, and if I can keep the chickens out long enough, I can plant the new flowers and have them grow. I'm afraid the beautiful Snow On the Mountain feather was so kind as to share with me might not have survived. The chickens have been dust bathing right where they're planted. Noooooo! 😭 I also bought a new 100' garden hose for $23.99 - that's really a good price - I kind of wish I'd bought a couple more. Of course, I had to buy a couple rotisserie chickens while I was there. I already have one deconstructed and the carcass cooking for future soup. I also got a dozen croissants, a dozen muffins and a bag of steak strip jerky (yes, I know it's terribly high in sodium - it will be doled out slowly). They had wiperblades for a really good price, so I bought replacements for both trucks to have on hand. I'd rather buy them on sale before I need them than pay a premium when I really need them. I had used the last of my white vinegar to try rejuvenating my water system filters, so I bought 6 more gallons, plus 3 smaller bottles of apple cider vinegar...wow, is that stuff expensive for what it is. I need to buy some natural ACV with the mother and make my own. Let's see, what else did I buy? Cat litter, Ziploc gallon freezer bags (which get used over and over), a 6 pack of canned air for the computers...I think that's all. I don't often spend over $300 at Costco, but I managed it this time, to the tune of $304.53. I'd better not let anything go to waste! My bff's shoe fell apart on her while we were in line at Costco, so we skipped the hot dog and drink lunch in favor of taking everything to the car and strapping the sole back on with duct tape, lol. We hit the nearby Goodwill in search of a pair of shoes she could wear, but decided after shopping there for a while that $15 was too much to pay for Goodwill shoes, even new with tags, and we were too tired and achy to shop the bins aka Goodwill Outlet store, so she skipped the shoes and we left with our few purchases and drove home. She bought one vase, and I bought 3 books (1 was even on my list, and I put back one that I thought I was missing until I checked my list - saving me 1.99 and the aggravation of buying another duplicate), a good, long-handled roasting fork for this coming firepit season (new in package for $2.49 - I've been looking for one, so this made me happy), and for $1.99, I bought a bag of canning bands and flats. Final count was 15 wide mouth bands, a wide mouth "all-in-one" lid, 8 narrow mouth flats and bands, and an odd sized all in one lid. That one nearly fits my odd sized canning jar that I keep bacon grease in. It still is a hair too large for the jar threads, but will work better as a lid than what I was using, so I'm okay with that. Been a while since I left a Goodwill only spending $10.45, but most of the prices were horribly high. Both Costco and Goodwill were really busy, just felt like way too many people. I was thankful for my N-95 mask and Lysol wipe, but was really happy to head home, especially when I saw that the parking lot at the bins was packed. My new filters have already arrived, so in the next dry spell, I'm planning to take one and a hair dryer to the pumphouse. One of the tricks to open the filter housing is to heat the housing with a hair dryer. It's worth trying.

Good news: I finally got a job and I start next week! The job even pays the same amount as the one I had last year. Yay! Covid has decreased the local salaries.... I will train at their location, but work from home.
My dog is on a new med for his arthritis (he is 14 and his breed has a life expectancy of 8). The med took about 6 weeks to fully work, but it seems to have eliminated most of his pain. I am very grateful that he isn't suffering!
Finally, I got an electric (battery powered) lawn mower. It is 20 lbs lighter than a gas powered mower and it is self propelled which should work on my front yard. If I can get my allergies under control, I will mow the front yard this week.
I need to get a list together of all of the things that I need to finish before I go back to work.

Glad to hear your dog is doing better too.

It's definitely spring around the homestead! And my husband's diet prescription is harder on me than him! I swear the man is taking legal versions of cocaine or some such stimulant that just keeps him going full bore! He is down a good, much needed 40lbs and I'm down 15 from trying to keep up with him! Now that he is back in what his doc calls the safe zone, this is his last 30 days of that. But, he has put the extra go go to excellent use. Living his whole life in the suburbs or downtown, country living has been a new adventure for him. He would often complain about the lack of well manicured gardens and yard areas. I inherited the property from a depression era hoarder and it sat vacant and unmaintained while we battled for seven years in probate. That well manicured lawn idea is going to take some work there son! So anyway, he finally got the hint. If ya don't like the overgrowth and dead leaves and trees, do something about it. As soon as poor Tim the toolman Taylor over here discovered he is capable of running a chainsaw and tractor while he is all cracked out burning excess fat ... the areas around the house that have been a someday project look fantastic! And I'm over here looking like I'm wearing an older sister's hand me downs, but whatever. Sometime this week I have to do a shopping trip, and need to get my new raised beds sewn with seed. They turned out so stinking adorable! My tomato's and peppers I started under the grow lights haven't popped up, but somehow, I ended up with spaghetti squash seed in a pot I keep in the house under a grow light for my purple stripe petunias... Who knows but it makes me giggle.

manygoatsnomore, a tip about the salt: Don't add salt when you are cooking. Sprinkle a little at a time on top as you eat. You will end up consuming far less sodium. Sometimes I like to eat plain fresh vegetables without salt or dressing like: celery, carrot and cucumber sticks (and little cherry tomatoes). There are some great non salt flavorings like table tasty. I find that smoked paprika satisfied without using salt in mexican dishes. If there are some vegetables you like to eat without cheese--focus on them.

Midtnmama, you probably already saw the salt video, about how 1 ounce of corn flakes have the same amount of sodium and 1 ounce of salted peanuts. The first doesn't taste salty because it is mixed in the corn flake dough, the second does taste salty because it is on the outside of the peanuts. I was really surprised when I learned that.
I'm making bread today and I make it without salt.

lilith Congrats on getting hubby into lawn mode! Sounds like he will do a great job keeping the place nice. Sympathies on the Depression era hoarder - I cleaned out my grandparents house when they went to the nursing home. They got married one month after the stock market crashed. They kept everything in case they might not be able to get it in the future. They kept tin cans from small olives one to #10 restaurant cans, washed and nested together manygoatsnomore I second feather on the not adding salt to your cooking. My dad had heart issues and I grew up cooking that way. They only thing that add salt to when cooking are bread and cookies. 😉 People look at you funny if you salt a biscuit.

Yikes! I had not seen that, but I believe it. When we go out to eat, I find the excessive sodium (while it tastes good) really dehydrates me now and I am up all night dying of thirst.

midtnmama, and everyone else (for some reason my brain is short circuiting tonight on which of you also posted about salt, lol - could have something to do with muscle relaxants and painkillers on board tonight)...that is one thing I do get right. I don't salt most things while cooking. 😁 And I'm down another couple pounds. I'm absolutely done in, but my back is aching so badly that I'm having trouble sleeping tonight. It's a good pain, though because I got a lot done today. I finished taking dog food buckets to the barn, along with empty buckets to put oystershell and black sunflower seeds into. The oystershell bag had drawn damp and fell apart when I went to pick it up, so I had to scramble for a dustpan to scoop it into the buckets. Got most of it. Then I spent time admiring Abby's work on the electric fencing she's putting in and picking up random trash from the fields, the barn, etc while I was at it. I found a nest of slightly aged eggs which I smashed and the chickens jumped on. I did more rearranging of lumber, pulled out nettles, which are coming up like gangbusters. I want a tiny patch of nettles, but they are incredibly invasive. I mended several trash cans and lids with Gorilla tape and broke up the already broken window into pieces to fit easily without damaging the can. That was a failure on my part...the free window I picked up last week broke through the 2nd pane when I tried to get it out of the truck. Only one 24x60 window survived. I guess I'm still one window to the good, anyway. I scrubbed up gas cans and decided to let several go. They were so old the plastic appeared to be developing microcracks. All of the empty cans that didn't have caps were dirty on the inside as well as caked with dust on the outside, so it took some work to clean them out. None of my scrubbing brushes have long enough handles. I finished up nearly all of the buckets today. There are 2 buckets soaking, and then it's those darned stuck together pickle buckets. If I can't get them apart, I'll try drilling a hole in one bucket to see if that will release them, and if that doesn't work, I'll cut them into frost protectors and pans/planters. I just want to be DONE! We found a few more nests today besides the one I smashed. The girls are cranking out nearly 3 dozen a day that I can find...hopefully they will keep laying in the nests we found today. I don't mind going to 6 different places, as long as I know where to look, lol! It was just so beautiful outside today that I just kept going. All little projects, but all things that neaten things up or repair stuff I've been putting off because there were so many more pressing issues. I still didn't get the filter changed or the rest of the tomato supports cut, but tomorrow is another day. 😊 Oh, I nearly forgot. I received ANOTHER packet of logic puzzle books in the mail today. I have no idea why they sent a duplicate of the order I paid for, but I was told to keep the cancelled order that arrived earlier this month, so I'm going to assume I'm to keep this bundle, too. I'll double check my account to make sure they didn't bill me for magazines I didn't order, of course. I won't lack for brain teasers to entertain myself! 😁

I wondered if you'd tried putting the bottom one in hot water to make it expand a bit or maybe air if any were trapped inside to help loosen it. I've also had good luck with my big red plastic tubs by tapping with a piece of 1" x 1" along the raised edge. I do this with the buckets/tubs turned upside down and holding the bucket I'm not tapping. Keep rotating the bucket as you tap. Good luck.

mogal and lilith, thank you both for the tips! I will try them. Lilith, those plugs should be a step up from using Gorilla tape over the holes, lol. I'm still a little sore this morning, but at least my back isn't seizing anymore. Probably means that I ought to get busy, lol. I need to go get hay, change the filter in the pumphouse, cut a pallet to size for the remainder of the floor in the front stall (which we obviously are not using as a stall), cut some pieces to fill in between the pallet slats and cut up the barrel of wood into tomato supports and firewood. Plus calling the credit union and working on my taxes, all the usual outdoor chores and working on Russell's coat. He never shed out properly along his hindquarters last year before growing in this winter's coat, so he's a mess.

manygoatsnomore, you mean you are not getting rain over there? A few drops here and forty mile per hour wind. The weather man didn’t talk about this, big surprise. Hope the rest of the week is better.

Hope the rest of the week is better. We've been getting rain off and on all day...tomorrow is supposed to be better, which is good, because my hay provider isn't available today. It's been pretty gusty off and on, too. Makes it hard to get enthused about doing much outside. Most of my planning has been pushed to tomorrow. 🙄

adinwnc, hurray on the new job, especially at a similar pay rate! That's really good news. Will you be working from home or on site? (eta: I forgot you said you'd be working from home after training. Sorry!) And how is it going with your driveway that you were having trouble stabilizing? It's hard to move things out if you can't use the driveway! 😊 Just when I thought I was out, they dragged me back in again....I don't know which movie quote I'm butchering, but in this case, it's the buckets AGAIN, lol! Found 4 more lurking behind the shipping container, some with a bit of potting soil in them, but mostly just playing hide and seek with me, I suspect. 🙄 I'm off to get round bales and then grain and another round bale, all my truck can handle at a time.

Lol, I knew one of you guys would know! Thank you. 😂 Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. First load is home, horses are happy, I need to get on the road for the 2nd load. Abby wants me to take the trailer to town to have the new tires mounted, but that is so not happening today. By the time we scoop 1000 lbs of feed from the tote to the barrels, I will be pretty well done for the day, I think.

then it's those darned stuck together pickle buckets. If I can't get them apart, I'll try drilling a hole in one bucket to see if that will release them + + + Once you get your hole drilled take an air nozzle that you would use to blow off the work bench with and put a puff of air between the buckets.. Usually pulls them apart well.. Be careful as if they are really stuck it can launch the bucket across the shop..

Usually pulls them apart well.. Be careful as if they are really stuck it can launch the bucket across the shop.. That was the plan my buddy, TL, and I were thinking about, too. He says I should be able to put the nozzle into the tiny crack between the stuck buckets and pop them apart, but I have my doubts that I can get a nozzle in there. Drilling a small hole in the bottom of the lower bucket just the right size for the nozzle seems much more likely to work. Either way, I've washed the crud and dust off the outside of the 5 bucket pairs and will move getting them apart to April's list, as I need to charge the air compressor and find the nozzle. I did try all the tips like heating the lower bucket and cooling the upper one, bumping the rims all the way around, etc. No luck. I'm going to check cleaning and mending buckets off of my March list...I've found and cleaned many more buckets this month than I expected, certainly more than the 10 stuck buckets! I put grooming Russell, The Muttley Wonder on my March list halfway through the month and shouldn'thave done. I already had too much on my list, and I think Abby would be more helpful than she turned out to be. She ended up working on installing electric fencing around the pastures instead. She has her eye on a new horse. 🙄 She did slather him with Cowboy Magic tonight. If I wasn't so tired out, I'd spend some quality time with him and an undercoat rake before bedtime. I really don't think it will happen, though. My taxes are not quite done...I keeping having to go back and forth between screens to fill out the form, and I'm getting to the point of diminishing returns. Just too tuckered out tonight. I got quite a bit done today. Had my cardiology consult today. She wants me to wear a cardiac monitor again for 2 weeks, starting mid-April. Not looking forward to that. The patches for the electrodes are itchy. She also wants me to see the pulmonologist. I thought the pulmonologist consult had already been ordered, but it wasn't on the list, so she ordered it. The way I've been coughing and bringing up phlegm, and been short of breath, I do need to be seen. I ran a few errands while I was in town. Met up with my bell choir director and sold her 4 dozen eggs. She just got her 2nd Covid shot and I get mine tomorrow, so next month we can visit without a mask. She suggested we get a coffee or something to celebrate. I think that sounds like a dandy idea. I returned a set of burner pans that didn't fit my stove to Lowes and bought 2 gallons of bar oil, then returned 2 packages of pork jerky to Grocery Outlet (purchased by mistake) and bought 6 bags of white cheese popcorn (on sale B2G1, which is a terrific bargain for Smart Food brand). Yeah, I know, high in sodium. I will ration it carefully! At least it's whole grain, lol. 😉 After we got home, I realized I'd forgotten to pick up my prescription. I'll have to pick it up tomorrow when I go in for my shot. That should be fun...I'll probably be towing the horse trailer (getting new tires put on it), and it's in a construction zone. 🙄 I haven't towed anything in years now. I hope I haven't lost my touch. When Abby and I planned this trip, I only had the tire store and the Covid shot (which is at the county fairgrounds) on my list. This afternoon, TL came over and helped me with the filter housing and helped Abby by checking her fencing. She had some spots that would have shorted out, so it was a good thing she asked. Then he left to work on his strawberry pyramid, and I got busy cutting tomato supports and scrap from them for firewood. Another box ticked on the March list. I also took the chainsaw to a pallet and cut it to fit the last spot in the stall floor in the feed room. I still need to fill in the gaps between pallet slats, level the floor and slide it into place....April's list. While I had the saw out, I cut up a bunch of branches and pallets into stove lengths and added it to the supply for 2023. That came to a screeching halt when I dulled my chain on a hidden nail...grrr. 😡 Hate it when that happens! I have planted a few plastic jugs of flower seeds this week and finally planted tomato seeds today...talk about taking it down to the wire. I was really hoping to clear my entire list for March, and I very nearly did. So, what DIDN'T I get done from the March list? I still have the vast majority of my winter sowing to do, and it's no longer winter. I still need to file my nearly finished taxes. I have 10 buckets still stuck together in parts, and I totally miscalculated the number of buckets of diesel fuel I need to strain, treat and seal into clean buckets with really good gasketed lids - not 8, but 15. Oy - that'sa lot more work than I thought, although technically that is on the April list. I didn't groom Mutt. I think that is it. ETA: I thought I had posted this last night, yet here it is, unposted at 0517. 🙄 I knew I was tired....😴💤
