Are you thinking ahead to be prepared for short or long term preparations you and your family might need?
What's the list for the month?
Are you doing it for a reason? I do it for security, to feel a sense of food and supply security, the consistency over the long haul.
I remember while I was going to school for my degree and working part time, I had a really almost impossible professor that changed the homework almost every class period (2 times a week). He expected 30 or more hours of work in homework, every week. With the changes adding more hours, I couldn't do my job and pass this course. I quit my job and we had enough supplies to make it through until the next semester and I could start working again. It wasn't easy but it was necessary.
Has this helped you through lean periods for one reason or another?

My list from last month WAS going pretty well until I lost my best buddy and working on projects partner on the 19th. I'm trying to get back on track and figure out how to do some of these projects without him...I figure it will take at least 3-4 people to replace all he did to help us.
I'll go ahead and do an end of month check for the November list before I post one for December.
November 2021 To-Do List:
1. Continue to put up firewood to season for next year. Want to finish filling the 3rd woodshed and beyond. β 2. Repair house roof and woodshed roofs as needed, including gutter repairs. Work in progress...tore off the DISH receiver and a section of rotted roof, tarped the open area well, so no more leak, but I can see more soft spots that need repairs, so this one goes on the December list. Have 2 of the 3 gutters off the house. 3. Get the wood and pallets from neighbors.I have an offer of help from another neighbor with a tractor, made before TL passed, so I need to walk over and ask when would be a good time to get this done. The neighbors with the pile have assured me the pile isn't going anywhere, but I need to get this done. 4. Get horses' teeth floated. β 5. Build more sheds and shelters for horses, hay, etc. 6. Finish organizing and cleaning the pantry, inventory contents. Moving to December to finish. 7. Put the rest of the house to rights and keep it that way. Meh, mixed bag here. Cleaned and organized the utility room, kept up on the basics, but need to finish some projects and move them OUT. 8. Get my Covid booster on the 2nd,β and get Abby's Covid booster scheduled and done. She still needs her booster. 9. Get roofing material estimate. Working on this. 10. Get my mammogram done. β
December 2021 To-Do List:
1. Patch the rest of the soft areas along the edges of roof, get the gutters re-mounted so they drain correctly and don't sag, get firm estimate for roofing materials and maybe get the new roof put on. 2. Get Abby's Covid booster done, dentist and eye appointments scheduled. 3. Get my dental checkup on the 9th and broken filling repair done the 21st. 4. Move projects currently taking up house space to shipping container so that we can decorate for Christmas. 5. Decorate for the holidays, then put away at month's end. 6. Keep working on shed building and cutting logs and firewood, cleaning up the woods and the east property line. 7. Have an easy start system put on my Stihl Wood Boss so I can get some use from it. Great saw, but I have trouble starting it. 8. Keep supporting Mrs TL any way I can. 9. Try out my chipper on the brush piles I've been building. 10. Finish the pantry cleaning and inventory. 11. Get that pile of pallets and wood moved home! 12. TBD

manygoatsnomore I am so sorry for the loss of TL! He did so much for you and taught you so much, I know that he will be greatly missed! It's good of you to support Mrs TL. I am sure that she is still in shock and will appreciate your help.

I can't believe it's already December! While the last couple of years since Covid hit seem to have crawled by day by day, it seems like the last few months have gone by in the blink of an eye. If I had known how much my life would change 2 weeks ago, I would have paid much more attention to each and every day before that. On the prep front, I allowed myself to lean too much on Tom's help with projects instead of figuring out how to do then myself. Now I'm having to either figure things out or spread my requests for help across the rest of the neighbors. The first thing I'm doing is paying $160+ to put an easy2start adaptation on my Stihl Wood Boss. My smaller Stihl is a tiny workhorse, but the bigger saw is more powerful, has a bigger gas tank and does the job much faster. My drawback with it is that I just can't physically pull start it. Tom used to actually run over and start it for me, usually after a few rounds of golf. I just feel silly asking anyone else to do that! So, the local Stihl shop is going to make a little (okay, a lot) more money off of me. It's worth the money to me to have a saw I can use. I'm also going to ask if they work on Husqvarna saws. I saw one there Tuesday, so I'm going to see if they can tune mine up so that it starts and runs nicely (it goes neither at the moment). I want to use it with my Alaskan mill, since it's much heavier than the Stihl, and harder to use in the woods. Its bar is also longer, so that's a plus. Some of my logs are pretty big. feather asked something along the lines of why we prep. I prep to avoid having to pay premium prices for groceries and to know that I'm always going to be able to feed my family and friends. I prep to make sure that we will be warm and dry if the power is out, and able to cook that food. I prep to make sure we have water to flush the toilets, and potable water to drink, for cooking, and for washing the dishes and our clothes. I prep to make sure things like TP shortages do not affect us. I prep to make sure we have an alternative power source and the means to can up the contents of our freezers should the grid go down for longer than a few days. I prep to make sure we have all we need to remain at home, sheltering in place, should one of the mutations of Covid prove able to evade the vaccine and be more lethal than Delta or Omicron, or should another virus crop up, as it will someday. I prep to have a comfortable life, no matter what happens, and a place to welcome my neighbors and friends to join us for dinner and dominoes when it's safe to do so. I prep because I hate to be bored on days when working outside isn't possible, so I have an extensive library, plus board games, cards, jigsaw puzzles and puzzle books and a to-do list of repairs needed that can be done inside, like putting together my shelves for the barn and shipping container, or rebuilding all the window screens. Heaven forbid I should run out of fun stuff and have to clean house, lol! I prep financially, so that my retirement fund will last my lifetime and leave a nest egg for Abby's use beyond my death. Being financially prudent means that when a major expense comes along, or an exceptional bargain, I have the funds to pay for it. Financial preparedness gives me peace while the stock market takes a plunge, because I know I can ride out anything short of complete economic collapse lasting years, and that I have ways to make what money I might need during that time. It evens out life's bumps, such as $4/gallon gas. Frugality is a fun challenge for me, rather than a feeling of deprivation. I guess I could just say that prepping gives me peace of mind and security that no matter what happens, we will be okay.

manygoatsnomore I am so sorry for the loss of TL! He did so much for you and taught you so much, I know that he will be greatly missed! It's good of you to support Mrs TL. I am sure that she is still in shock and will appreciate your help. Thank you. I'm adjusting to life without him in it, but I still miss him dreadfully. It's worse for Mrs TL, but I probably understand how she feels more than anyone else. It's just natural to grieve him together. I stopped by yesterday along with R, our mutual neighbor lady and friend, with whom I was talking when Mrs TL came home. We walked over and helped her and her son unload groceries and just talked for a bit. She shared how hard it was to grocery shop when everything reminded her of things she bought for TL. She said she was managing to hold it together...until she turned a corner and saw the pecan pies, his absolute favorite. She said she just broke down and cried, right in the middle of Fred Meyer. I totally get that...I've cried so many times in the last 2 weeks when confronted with a reminder of him. I just gave her a hug. We asked her what we could do for her that would help, and I let her know my door was always open any time she needed to talk or cry, or anything. She said it really helped to even just get a text every day or two, checking in and letting her know we were thinking of her, so I will continue to do that, as well as stopping by frequently to check in on both of them. ETA: By the way, woohoo on getting your driveway repairs done! I'm still reading back through posts that I missed over the past couple weeks, and saw that you can finally get in and out easily again. That must be such a relief. π

Haven't even looked at last month's list to see how I did. Today I'm canning chicken....and canning chicken....and canning chicken Yum, chicken! You did a great job on your list again in November. ππ Unlike me, you actually DO what's on the list, lol. π I've always thought making the list was an achievement, in and of itself, heehee. DOING it, now that's just a bonus. π

Well, one item on my list will NOT be happening. Unfortunately, after arriving, it turns out that the easy start system would not fit my saw after all. They also checked my Husqvarna and it has a seized piston, so it didn't get fixed. At least there was no charge for checking the saw, and they put my bar and chain back on my Stihl for me, also no charge. I guess I'm just going to have to get stronger so I can reliably start my bigger Stihl myself. There's nothing wrong with it - I'm just a weeny-arm! π
I also meant to ask my doctor at my appointment about a cortisone injection for at least my right knee, but after she asked how my antidepressant was working and I broke into tears trying to explain that it was working until TL died...well, it totally flew out of my mind to ask about my knee(s).
With all the walking I do in the woods, stacking branches and brush, and moving firewood after I cut it, my knees are really complaining, even with my pain meds. I consider it an important prep to do all I can to get rid of pain while the options are available. Between my back, my knees and my broken tooth, I've had more than the average amount of physical pain lately, and I'm really over it.
Tomorrow, rain or shine, we have to go get hay, and then I want to get back in the woods. It's been hovering just above freezing during daylight hours and very wet, with a sloppy mix of rain and snow coming down all day, so I didn't get out to the woods...that's 2 days straight between weather and doctor/dentist appointments. I guess I'll just have to bundle up a bit and get out there tomorrow, no matter what.
At least while I was in town, I was able to buy 5 gallons of non-ethanol premium gas - cost a small fortune, but I'm stocked up for saw gas, lawnmower and chipper gas, etc. I still need to put a bit of Pri-G in the cans, but that is easily remedied in the morning. I'm going through chainsaw gas and bar oil like crazy, but it sure beats paying for electric heat!

manygoatsnomore, I woke up and you were on my mind. I was thinking about how you were doing since TL died and how you are managing. I saw how gas in bismarck nd was down to $2.99 US/US gallon. I don't know how the prices are out by you. You are in my thoughts and prayers, and I find you are amazing in all the work you are doing to keep things going on your homestead.

mgm, As to all the outdoor work and your painful knees, have you paid good attention to what footwear you're putting on, tried adding inserts, worn knee braces or leg warmers? The bases of both my thumbs just ached something awful all of last weekend. I made a point to only wash with warm water, and have been wearing knit gloves even if I feel warm enough. Thumbs feel much better.

useless, I've tried a lot of different things, but I'm afraid years of abusing my knees is catching up with me. The nurse from my doctor's office just called with the results of my thyroid test (no changes in dose, as I'd known from looked at the results on line last night), and I took the opportunity to ask if she would put in a note for my doctor about the cortisone shot or a referral if she doesn't want to do it herself. feather, thank you. I'm trying hard to stay busy, as it helps quite a lot. I tried to start my larger Stihl saw today, and I DID IT!!! ππΆππ€ΈββοΈ Actually, I did it twice. It died while I was carrying it out to the woods, so I had to start it again. It's still not a pull it once and it goes kind of thing, but at least I can use it without having to ask someone else to start it for me. That is very freeing. AND, it saved me over $160 that I was going to spend on that easy start system. π I've cut up almost all of the dead trees I felled earlier in the week, so when I go back out, I'll take down a few more or keep working on other already downed trees. Hopefully, my saw will continue to start for me, but if not, I still have my "baby" saw.

Regular gas is ranging from $3.69 to $3.99 here, depending on the station, in my county. Non-ethanol regular gas is $4.06 to $4.50, but I prefer to buy the next grade up, which was $4.46/gallon at the only station semi-locally that carries it. I bought a hair over 5 gallons, so I spent $22 and change for it. It seems to help the saws start more easily when I use the higher octane non-e gas.
Abby and I walked over to our kitty-corner neighbors yesterday to check out a leg wound on B, the husband. J, the wife, had called and asked me to take a look and help her convince him to see the doctor.
There is a lump that looks worrying, so I added my "please don't be so stubborn and get it looked at" to hers. It may be nothing, just healing going on, but I really don't think so. It's an on the job injury, so it's totally covered, and he's in a lot of pain, with no pain meds. Being a cowboy, he's "tough". I reminded him what happened to another "tough guy" that didn't listen when we all told him to go to the hospital. He promised he would go tomorrow.
He also reminded my that they consider us part of their family and will help fill the void that Tom left, especially tractor work, mechanical stuff, etc. I am so blessed with wonderful neighbors! We stayed and visited for a while longer before heading home to try to beat the rain and cut a bit more wood.
We only got short gaps in the steady rain yesterday and today. I wore myself out moving firewood and covering it with a tarp yesterday BEFORE I tried to start my bigger saw. Should have tried starting the saw first. I came close to starting it, but my arm wore out. I ended up using my baby saw to cut up the rest of the wood I had down and to try to cut down another standing dead tree, until I managed to spin the chain off the bar. Grr. It was also getting dark, so I had to suspend operations.
Today, I didn't even try to start a saw. I split a bunch of rounds and stacked them in the back row of shed #2, where the rain water can evaporate while I use the dry wood in front. This is all seasoned wood I'm cutting up right now, just rained on. Then it started raining and the wind picked up, so I let Abby off the hook for bringing in more wood (she brought me one big wheelbarrow load today) and just had her make sure the tarp was in place over the stack in the woods. I didn't want her near a dead standing tree that's been half cut through, when the wind is blowing.
I spent some time under the shelter of the woodshed overhangs, rearranging wood in #2 to maximize the ease of access to the various wood in it, and then moved a bunch of tools out of shed #1, to make more space for kindling and small firewood storage. By that time, I was cold through. We didn't get out of the 30s all day, and a wet 37Β° is a COLD 37Β°.
I brought in some axes with damaged handles, ratchet straps that need pulled back out and wrapped neatly, and other small projects that I can work on inside where it's dry and warm, but I'm not really in the mood to work on anything else tonight. It looks like it will be another rainy day tomorrow, so maybe then.

midtnmama and Ohio Dreamer, yeah, our gas is always really high out here on the left coast. At least we aren't as high as California or Alaska! I'm not sure what makes fuel so much more expensive here - it can't be ALL road taxes. π Midtnmama, I have been using a 2 wheeled wheelbarrow to bring the cut rounds from woods to sheds. I try to get Abby to do most of the trundling back and forth with it while I'm either cutting wood or stacking limbs, but I do some of it, too. The plan was to get the lawn tractor working so I could just haul wood in the little trailer that fits it, and we were nearly finished with that project when Tom passed. If I hadn't had to wait on a bearing to come in, it would have been working now. Sigh. πͺ We are working on teaching Ember Pup to stay in the orchard or stay home...she has learned to climb over the part of the fence with chicken wire on it. She can hook her toes into the wire and climb out, the little dickens! We need to reinforce and increase the height of the fence all the way around anyway, as she's 10 months old now, and at some point, she will be coming into heat. I've been in contact with the breeder we got her from, both to get her date of birth (Feb 3rd, my youngest granddaughter's birthday) and to find out who might have an unrelated male when it comes time to breed her. I would like a litter from her before we spay her, and want to keep one or two of the puppies to help her with guard duty. She was able to supply me the phone number of the breeder she bought her male from, and said that gal has several lines to breed from. What she couldn't give me was the NAME of the breeder - it was in her phone under the name of her dog, not the breeder, lol! Russell, the Muttley Wonder's getting pretty old, and he deserves his retirement. It's taken him a while, but he has finally bonded with Ember enough to play with her and stay close, but he still takes some alone time when she gets too bouncy for him. It's funny, because he was pretty jealous of her at first, and now, SHE is jealous of him, lol. If I'm paying him attention, she tries to crowd in between us, like she's telling him that I'm hers! She doesn't get away with that kind of behavior, though. I was HIS, first, after all! I didn't get much of anything done today...had trouble falling asleep last night (and again tonight), then overslept this morning, puttered around inside too long, and then had bell choir practice, so I didn't get anything done outside. I did sell 3 dozen eggs at bells and picked up my pain meds at the pharmacy afterward, and I did laundry and housework, so the day wasn't a total loss. If the rain stays away, maybe I can start my big saw again tomorrow. π€

manygoatsnomore, I think our taxes are about 71 cents on a gallon here. Not much going on here today. The furnace guy is coming this morning for a check-up. So I bumped up the heat so we don't look crazy, lol. Haven't had a fire in a while, I just bump the heat up to 58 and survive, since it's in the 40's outside, that isn't too much work (IE expense) for the furnace. I'll save the wood for cold days....which are coming this weekend, I think. I haven't worked on my list much, I just don't want to, lol. Been doing things not on my list but still need done. Got into the alcove off my daughter's old room. Found my missing tote of winter clothes that she told me didn't exist! Found my missing wool socks, thermal shirts and nice tops. I knew I had a few nice sweaters I could wear places this time of year....not just nice t-shirts! Had a nibble on Father-in-laws house. They seemed extremely interested, but haven't heard back from them. They said they needed a few days to make calls. It's a private sale (we haven't even advertised) and he's on the road M-F. So not hearing isn't a bad sign, yet. Sure would be nice to be rid of the place!
